Countdown to Surgery

Kelli and I are at the Courtyard Marriott in Baltimore.  Tomorrow, I have an appointment at Johns Hopkins for a pre-op evaluation with the Anesthesiology Department.  On Monday of this week, I had a physical with my primary care physician in preparation for the surgery.  Next Monday, I have an MRI and CT Scan in Roanoke, and we come back to Johns Hopkins next Thursday for biopsies.

Many people have asked if there will be an evaluation to determine the results of chemo.  The biopsies and scans will give info about that as well as rule out any cancer spread.

The big surgery itself will be on June 7.

Up to this point the surgery has been far enough removed that I have not thought much about it.  It is getting pretty real and close now.  In preparation, I have talked to others who have gone through the surgery already.  They have glowing things to say about the staff at Johns Hopkins in general and Dr. Schoenberg in particular.  They also have had relatively rapid recoveries and few complications.  Each had to return to the hospital for different reasons for a couple of days, but both felt like they had mastered their new plumbing in less than four months.  That is better than what I had read online.
