Friday's chemo session lasted from 10:15 until around 4:15. I saw a couple of people whom I know. One was the parent of a student, and another was Tom Rudisill who taught at Salem many years ago. Both were there as patients. One young lady walked up to me and asked me if I was the teacher who was in the paper. She turned out to be the niece of Gayle Jamison who teaches with me. So chemo is now the new hang-out.
I mentioned to the doctor that the vein that was used for the first chemo treatment had turned hard. He explained that other veins in the area would take over for that one. I asked if the vein would recover over time, and he said, "No, it is dead." I am pretty sure I have another dead vein on the other arm as well. He said that God did not intend for those chemicals to flow through those veins. He explained that it is a little like running a wire brush through the inside of the vein.
My blood counts were down from previous checks, but none were too low for the treatment to be postponed this time. I am a little concerned that I may not be able to have the treatment next week. My red blood cell count was at 11, and 10 is the cut-off point. My platelets were 150,000 but were way down from where they were the previous check.
I went to bed about 7 p.m. Friday night and stayed in bed until about 5 p.m. today. I did get up twice in that time for about a half hour each time. I have been awake since then, but I am going to turn in now.
Thanks for checking in on me.
