A Beautiful Day

On Saturday, Kelli got a call from her friend Tricia Downie.  Tricia and her husband Alan rented a water slide in honor of the beautiful Saturday weather, and they were inviting our boys for a day of fun.  I was not up to the trip, so Kelli and the boys spent the afternoon at the Downie's.  Around 4:15, Kelli called to see if I was up to going out to dinner with the Downie's.

We met at the El Rodeo at Cave Spring for a great time.  It is hard for me to capture what I witnessed hearing about the day of the water slide, but I will try.  The Downie's opened their yard to the whole neighborhood, not only treating everyone to the slide but to ice cream as well.

Kelli met Tricia through the Roanoke Guatemala Adoption Group and developed a friendship with her.  I was treated to the opportunity to learn more about this remarkable couple at dinner.  They met at VT where they were both Young Life leaders.  For those of you who may not know, college age Young Life volunteers work with high school kids to introduce them to faith in Christ.  YL leaders spend at least as much time as volunteers as they do on their college educations.

Young Life missionaries are typically special people who are so much fun to be around that they draw high school students to YL Club meetings and YL camps.  It appears that the Downie's have continued their spirit of grace and joy right into their adult lives as parents, neighbors, and friends.  My boys and my wife had a great afternoon, and we all had a wonderful time of fellowship at dinner.

Thanks to the Downie's for a day of beauty!

  2. Ray,
I haven't been on fb for awhile, but Tricia mentioned she had posted your link. I heard this on the radio on Monday and you came to mind...

    I Needed the Quiet
I needed the quiet so He drew me aside,
Into the shadows where we could confide,
Away from the bustle where all the day long
I hurried and worried when active and strong.
I needed the quiet though at first I rebelled.
But gently, so gently, my cross He upheld
And whispered so sweetly of spiritual things.
Though weakened in body, my spirit took wings
To heights never dreamed of when active and gay.
He loved me so greatly He drew me away.
I needed the quiet. No prison my bed,
But a beautiful valley of blessings instead–
A place to grow richer in Jesus to hide,
I needed the quiet so He drew me aside.
